JOE ESTE NAMED CHARACTER AWARD RECIPIENT FROM TENNESSEE SPORTS HALL OF FAME

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame announced today that former University of Tennessee at Martin football standout Joe Este is its 2018 Character Award recipient as part of the organization’s annual Champion Within Awards.
Este will be formally presented with the Character Award during the Tennessee Hall of Fame luncheon on Saturday, June 16 at the Omni Nashville.
A Kenner, La. native, Este was a key part of the Skyhawk defensive backfield under head coach Jason Simpson from 2015-16. He earned a start at safety in 22 of his 23 career games, logging 129 tackles (11.5 for loss), four interceptions, 22 passes defended (including 18 pass breakups), one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.
Este led the team in passes defended and pass breakups in each of his two seasons in a UT Martin uniform to help lead a vaunted defensive unit that led the Ohio Valley Conference in scoring defense (14.3 points per game) and ranked in the top-10 in the Football Championship Subdivision ranks in 10 different categories in 2017.
Off the field, Este juggled life as a collegiate student-athlete while also raising his two nephews. He is in the process of adopting his nephews after also providing his homeless mother with a new home and life stability. He graduated from UT Martin with a degree in health and human performance in December 2017 and is now pursuing professional football opportunities.
The Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame pays tribute to all those who have made an impact through sports in Tennessee.
