SKYHAWK TENNIS LOOKS TO CLINCH SPOT IN OVC TOURNAMENT THIS WEEKEND ON THE ROAD

MARTIN, Tenn. – The regular season concludes this weekend for the University of Tennessee at Martin tennis squad, who travels to the Land of Lincoln to take on SIUE at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 13 and Eastern Illinois at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 14.
Going into the final week of the regular season, the Skyhawks are in sixth place in the Ohio Valley Conference standings at 3-4. With a pair of wins this weekend, UT Martin could potentially jump up as high as the No. 4 seed in next week’s six-team OVC Tournament, which will be played at the Centennial Sportsplex Tennis Center in Nashville, Tenn. on April 20-22.
The Skyhawks are playing their best tennis of the spring, as they swept OVC foes Southeast Missouri (4-3) and Tennessee State (5-2) last week. Andrea Plantada was a perfect 3-0 for UT Martin last week, winning matches at No. 3 and No. 4 singles as well as a No. 3 doubles decision.
In OVC play, the Skyhawks have won 10 of their 16 doubles decisions. Asel Jumamukhambetova and Jemima Potter have posted a team-best five wins at No. 1 while the duo of Plantada and Amelia Campbell has reeled off four consecutive victories in doubles action. Potter and Plantada each sport a team-high four wins in OVC singles competition.
Overall, Jumamukhambetova and Potter have dialed up a team-high 11 doubles wins apiece while Jumamukhambetova claims the most singles victories (nine) on the squad.
UT Martin leads the all-time series against SIUE by an 8-4 margin while also managing a 21-7 all-time record against Eastern Illinois.
One season after SIUE generated a 21-1 record on its way to a second consecutive OVC championship, the Cougars head into the week with an 0-18 overall record and an 0-7 mark in league play. Lara Tupper paces SIUE in singles play with team-highs of three OVC victories and eight overall wins. The sophomore out of Golf Coast, Australia also has notched a team-best three doubles victories during the 2017-18 campaign.
Eastern Illinois comes into the week with a 10-12 overall record and 4-3 OVC slate. The Panthers have been guided by the tandem of Stella Cliffe (OVC Player of the Week on Feb. 7 and April 4) and Grace Summers (OVC Player of the Week on Feb. 21). That duo boasts a 6-0 OVC record at No. 1 doubles while Summers accounts for a team-best 16 doubles victories. Emily Pugachevsky is Eastern Illinois’ leader in singles wins (18) while she and Claire Martin have each notched a team-best four OVC singles victories.
