MURRAY, Ky. – The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team capped off a lengthy road swing with a series sweep of Murray State on Monday afternoon, outlasting the Racers 3-2 in extra inning before notching a 4-0 shutout to close out the series.
The Skyhawks (19-22, 4-6 OVC) notched 15 hits on the day while scoring seven runs. Junior Alli Fulcher paced the squad with three hits on the day while notching a RBI. Meanwhile the group of Rachel Williams, Veronica Pezzoni, Gracyn McBride, Paige Clark and Lauren Myers each tallied a pair of base knocks on the day. Myers paced the Skyhawks with three RBIs on the day while Clark tallied a pair.
The pitching duo of Hannah Ridolfi (8-11, 2.38 ERA) and Caitlin Karo (11-8, 2.37 ERA) posted a pair of strong performances in the circle. Ridolfi tallied her second shutout of the season, striking out four in seven innings of work. Karo was also impressive, allowing two runs in eight innings of action.
Game 1: UT Martin 3, Murray State 2 (Eight Innings)
UT Martin jumped out to an early lead in the first half of the doubleheader, scoring two run in the top of the first. A leadoff triple by Pezzoni marked one of four hits for the Skyhawks in the opening inning as she scored on a fielding error on the second at bat of the contest. The squad would load the bases on back-to-back singles by Fulcher and McBride before Clark came through with a single through the left side to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.
Murray State cut the margin in half in the bottom of the second inning as Jensen Striegel scored Sierra Gilmore on a fielder’s choice. Still trailing by one run in the bottom of the sixth, the Racers tied the game and ultimately forced extra innings with a RBI double by Madison Culver.
Faced with extra inning, the Skyhawks looked for a run in the top of the eighth. Fulcher led off the inning with a single to right field before Alicia Hansen entered the game as a pinch runner. A sacrifice and a groundout would move Hansen over to third before Clark came through in the clutch again to drive the runner in the final 60 feet and give the Skyhawks a 3-2 victory.
Game 2: UT Martin 4, Murray State 0
Much like in the first game of the day, the Skyhawks scored two runs in the top of the first inning. A leadoff walk to Pezzoni was followed by a triple from Myers to take an early lead. With the runner still 60 feet away from the plate, Fulcher lofted a deep fly to left field which scored the second run of the inning and gave the squad an early advantage.
The Skyhawks built upon the margin in the top of the second as Aeron Smith singled for a leadoff base knock. Pinch runner Madelyn Dycus would enter the contest and move over into scoring position before later scampering home on a fielding error to push the lead out to three runs.
Murray State posted its biggest scoring threat in the bottom of the second inning by stringing together three base knocks. The Racers would ultimately load the bases but Ridolfi would get the Skyhawks out of the jam with an innocent infield pop up to cap the inning.
The Skyhawks scored their final insurance run in the top of the seventh as Rachel Williams led off the inning with a single up the middle. The senior later moved over to third base before Myers notched her second RBI of the day with an opposite field single to punctuate the 4-0 victory.
UT Martin will return to action on Wednesday, April 11 when playing host to Evansville in a single contest. First pitch from Bettye Giles Field is scheduled for 3 p.m.
