CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team struggled to keep one of the Ohio Valley Conference’s top offensive threats in check on Sunday afternoon, dropping the series doubleheader at Austin Peay by final scores of 5-0 and 11-2.
The Skyhawks (17-22, 2-6 OVC) would drop their second straight conference series after allowing a red-hot Governors squad to pound out 23 hits and 16 runs on the day. Meanwhile, UT Martin was limited offensively, scoring just two runs on eight hits.
The upperclassmen quartet of Savannah Dodson, Alli Fulcher, Jodie Duncan and Lauren Myers each tallied a pair of base hits on the day while the rest of the lineup went hitless. Additionally, the senior pair of Dodson and Duncan would capitalize on their two hits by each notching a RBI.
Three pitchers saw action for the Skyhawks as Hannah Ridolfi and Caitlin Karo were hit with losses. Ridolfi allowed three earned runs over 5.1 innings of work while Karo allowed six runs over five innings. Sophomore Seeley Layne appeared in both contests, allowing five runs in 0.2 innings of work.
Game One: Austin Peay 5, UT Martin 0
Austin Peay jumped on the board first with a pair of runs in the opening inning of play. After a leadoff single by Kacy Acree to start the frame, the OVC’s leader in home runs and RBIs Danielle Liermann posted a two-run home run to left.
The first two Governors would reach to lead off the bottom of the second inning to start another scoring rally. With runners on second and third, Bailey Shorter doubled to center to clear the bases and take a 4-0 lead.
The Govs would cap off the game’s scoring with a solo home run by Brooke Pfefferle in the bottom of the sixth to seal the five-run victory.
Game Two: Austin Peay 11, UT Martin 2 (Six innings)
UT Martin would finally get into the scoring column for the first time on the day in the top of the first inning. Myers and Fulcher would put a pair of runners on base with a single and a walk, respectively. Needing to get the game’s first run home, Duncan laced a two-out single up the middle to score Myers and take an early lead.
The Skyhawks added to their margin in the top of the second inning as Paige Clark reached on a fielding error before moving over to third following a sacrifice and a fly out. With the runner 60 feet away, Dodson doubled to left field to score the run and lead a 2-0 advantage.
Austin Peay charged back in the bottom of the second inning to take a two-run advantage of its own. The Govs would load the bases to set Liermann up again for a big at-bat which she turned into a three-run double to right center to take the team’s first lead. The home squad would not be done however as Morgan Rackel doubled to right to cap a four-run inning.
After adding two more runs in the third inning, the Govs put the game away in the bottom of the sixth inning. Four consecutive singles saw two runs cross the plate on RBIs by Shorter and Liermann. With zero outs on the board and two runners on, Rackel ended the game an inning early with a three-run home run to left force the mercy rule and end the contest at an 11-2 margin.
UT Martin will return to action on Monday, April 9 with a road doubleheader at Murray State. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
