UT MARTIN RODEO OPENS MONTH OF APRIL AT ARKANSAS-MONTICELLO

MARTIN, Tenn. – Competing in an official capacity for the first time since Feb. 22, the University of Tennessee at Martin rodeo teams took part in the rodeo hosted by Arkansas-Monticello over the weekend.
The UT Martin men’s team piled up 650 points on its way to a second-place finish out of eight teams. The women’s squad compiled 60 points to take home sixth place honors.
Jonny Walker was one of three cowboys in bareback riding to accrue points in all three phases, as he placed second in the average (134), second in the short go (72) and third in the opening round (62). Houston Herbert also tallied third-place honors in average (59) and in the first round (59).
Three UT Martin cowboys amassed points in calf roping, led by Chase Thrasher (second place with a time of 9.9 seconds in the short go, third place in the average with a time of 23.2 seconds). Ross Mitchell placed fifth in both average (27.1) and in the short go (13.8) while Colt Matthews notched third-place accolades with a time of 9.4 seconds in the first round.
UT Martin boasted five cowboys who earned points in steer wrestling. Thrasher recorded strong finishes in the first round (4.3, second), short go (5.4, third) and in average (9.7, third). Matthews tallied a third-place performance in the opening round (4.5), a fourth-place effort in average (11.2) and a fifth-place showing in the short round (6.7). Hunter Styles opened the event with the best time in the first round (3.9) while Craig Parks (fourth in the first round with 4.6 seconds) and Ethan Foster (sixth with a 12.6 average and sixth with a 6.9 in the short go) were also responsible for team points.
In goat tying, Kayla Lombardo placed third in the first round after finishing in 7.8 seconds. She also posted points with a 16.7 average, which was the fifth-best time in the field.
Mitchell came in fourth place in both the average (17.6) and in the short round (8.5) in team roping, competing alongside Ethan Wheeler from East Mississippi. The UT Martin duo of Robbie Van Holten and Styles also accounted for points in the first round with a fifth-place performance of 7.5 seconds.
In barrel racing, Raegan Taylor claimed the best time in the short go (14.27) while generating the second-best effort with a 29.54 average. Summer Conley also tallied third-place accolades with a time of 14.63 seconds in the short go while garnering fourth-place honors in average (29.87).
Ryan McDaniel came through with a pair of solid performances in bull riding, as his 72 was good enough for second place in both the average and in the first round.
UT Martin now turns its attention to its own 50th Annual Spring College Rodeo, which will take place at the Ned McWherter Agricultural Pavilion on April 12-14.
