LATE-INNING SURGE BY MOREHEAD STATE TOO MUCH AS SKYHAWK BASEBALL FALLS 15-5
April 5, 2018
MOREHEAD, Ky. – The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team struck early in today’s battle against Morehead State but suffered a late-inning surge by the Eagles, dropping the game 15-5.
UT Martin (5-21, 2-11 OVC) was led by freshman backstop Blake Davis as he tallied two hits and drove in two RBIs. Billy Edwards (career-high three hits and one RBI), Jordan Stoner (two hits and one RBI) and Casey Harford (one hit and one RBI) rounded out the run support in the contest. Tyler Albright also recorded a pair of base knocks for the Skyhawks.
Dom Bazzani drew the start for UT Martin today as he tossed four complete innings. He allowed five earned runs but fanned four Eagles in his time on the mound. Peyton Cain (0-3) was tagged with the loss as he gave up three earned runs in his three complete innings. Zack Denney pitched 0.1 inning as he recorded the out via the punchout. Jefferey O’Doherty logged 0.2 inning of perfect baseball, needing just seven pitches to retire both batters.
It would only take two pitches for Stoner to send a ball over the left field wall to claim an early 1-0 lead over Morehead State.
The Eagles put up a trio of runs in the bottom of the first inning to lead the Skyhawks 3-1. Bazzani would open and close the inning via the strikeout.
UT Martin would tally two runs in the fourth as Collin Edwards got things started by drawing a hit by pitch followed by Davis being plunked as well. Billy Edwards then ripped a single to center, advancing to second on the throw and plating Collin Edwards and moving Davis to third. Next, Harford doubled to left field to score Davis and tie the ballgame up 3-3.
The Skyhawks took a two-run lead in the fifth inning as Albright started the charge with a double down the left field line. Collin Edwards was able to reach third on a fielding error as Albright moved up to third base. Whitley was then hit by a pitch to load the bases just in time for a Davis double to right center that plated both Collin Edwards and Albright and gave UT Martin a 5-3 advantage.
Morehead State answered with two runs of its own in the fifth as things were knotted up at 5-5.
The Eagles added on three runs in the seventh and piled on seven more in the eighth to take a 15-5 lead and eventual final score.
The Skyhawks return to action against Morehead State with a doubleheader tomorrow. First pitch is slated for noon CST.
