SKYHAWK TENNIS CAPS OFF SENIOR DAY WITH THRILLING 4-3 OVC WIN OVER SEMO

MARTIN, Tenn. – In her last appearance at Skyhawk Varsity Courts, senior Elina Geut generated a win at No. 6 singles to help the University of Tennessee at Martin power past Ohio Valley Conference rival Southeast Missouri, 4-3, this afternoon.
Geut, who was honored for her career contributions on the court before the match, came through with UT Martin’s first singles win on the day. She defeated Maja Lundell by a 6-4, 6-3 margin to help the Skyhawks improve to 2-4 in OVC play and 2-12 overall.
UT Martin began the day with a successful doubles display, as the Skyhawks chalked up victories at No. 1 and No. 3. The No. 1 tandem of Asel Jumamukhambetova and Jemima Potter reeled off a 6-3 win while the No. 3 duo of Andrea Plantada and Amelia Campbell posted a 6-3 win to earn the doubles point. UT Martin’s No. 2 team of Mizuki Sakurai and Olha Burak were also ahead by a 5-4 margin before the clinching point.
Southeast Missouri (4-11, 1-5 OVC) won the first two singles matches before Geut’s victory evened the match at 2-all.
The Skyhawks then emerged victorious in each of their next two singles decisions to win the match. Sakurai was responsible for a 6-1, 6-2 triumph at No. 5 before Plantada’s 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 3 sealed the victory.
UT Martin has a quick turnaround before its next match, as it will head to Nashville for a showdown tomorrow against Tennessee State. First serve from the Currey Tennis Complex is scheduled for 3 p.m.
