April 4, 2018
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team returned to its winning ways with a 4-1 non-conference victory at Middle Tennessee on Wednesday afternoon.
The Skyhawks (17-20) outhit the Blue Raiders on the day while capitalizing on five walks and three stolen bases. Junior Lauren Myers paced the Skyhawks by going 2-for-2 on the day with a pair of RBIs while Alli Fulcher and Savannah Dodson also tallied RBIs on the afternoon. Freshman Veronica Pezzoni also tallied a big day for the Skyhawks despite failing to register a hit by working the count for three walks while scoring a pair of runs.
Freshman Caitlin Karo (10-7) was impressive once again, moving into double-digit victories for the season after tossing her 13th complete game of the season. Karo would be strong, allowing just two hits and zero earned runs in seven innings of action.
UT Martin got the scoring started in the top of the first inning. A leadoff walk to Pezzoni got the game started before moving into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. With a runner in scoring position, Fulcher drove the speedster home from second on a RBI single down the left field line to take an early advantage.
The Skyhawks added another run in the top of the third inning by a similar series of events. Pezzoni would tally her second walk of the contest before swiping second and moving over the third on a throwing error. With Pezzoni on third base, Myers slapped an opposite field single into left field to take a two-run lead.
UT Martin remained aggressive in the top of the fourth inning, once again pushing out its advantage. Rachel Williams got the inning started with a single to third base before being pulled for pinch runner Halie Fain. The speedster Fain would waste little time making her presence known, swiping second base while Aeron Smith followed it up with a walk to put a pair of runners on the bags. Both runners would later move into scoring position before a single by Dodson drove in Fain to score the game’s third run. The Skyhawks added their fourth run of the game later in the frame as Myers draw a walk with the bases loaded to notch her second RBI of the contest.
Middle Tennessee finally got onto the board in the bottom half of the fourth inning. Summer Burgess led off the inning with a single to left before a fielding error on the following play put a pair of runners on. The Blue Raiders would punctuate the inning with a RBI groundout by Lexi Cushing to make it a 4-1 contest.
UT Martin will return to action with a pair of Ohio Valley Conference doubleheaders on the horizon when traveling to Murray State on Saturday, Apr. 7 before squaring off at Austin Peay on Sunday, Apr. 8.
