April 3, 2018
MARTIN, Tenn. – The newly expanded National Collegiate Equestrian Association national championship seedings were announced this afternoon, as the University of Tennessee at Martin prepares for its first round matchups at the Extraco Events Center in Waco, Texas on April 18-21.
Nationally ranked in the top-10 of the NCEA polls for 16 consecutive weeks, the Skyhawks will battle for a national championship in equitation over fences, equitation on the flat, horsemanship and reining. The new format this year includes event titles in the preceding four categories as event rankings were determined by statistics (win/loss, home/away, current rank of opponent) of regular season head-to-head competition. The final four riders in each event will take part in the championship round on Saturday, April 21.
UT Martin is ranked No. 8 in the equitation over fences field and will be matched up against No. 9 Fresno State. The winner will take on No. 1 seed Texas A&M. This season, the Skyhawks have produced 25 wins, six MOP’s and an average score of 73.5 in the event.
In equitation on the flat, UT Martin is also ranked eighth and will once again take on No. 9 Fresno State in the opening round. The victor will advance to take on No. 1 Georgia. The Skyhawks compiled 23 victories, five MOP’s and a 68.2 average score in this event in 2017-18.
UT Martin was assigned the No. 10 seed in horsemanship and is pitted against No. 7 SMU on the first day. The winner of that matchup advances to play No. 2 Auburn. As a team, the Skyhawks have generated 21 victories, four MOP’s and an average score of 71.1 this season in that event.
In reining, UT Martin is seeded No. 11 and will compete against No. 6 Baylor in the first round. The winner will play the opening round winner of No. 3 Auburn and No. 14 Minnesota-Crookston. The Skyhawks have notched 24 points, three MOP’s and a 65.3 average tally in the event in 2017-18.
