April 2, 2018
JONESBORO, Ark. – The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team accounted for 34 birdies as a team through the first two rounds of the Bubba Barnett Intercollegiate today, ranking in third place out of 14 teams in the event held at RidgePointe Country Club.
The Skyhawks’ 35 birdies were the second-most in the field through 36 holes, as UT Martin was one of only three teams to shoot under-par through two rounds. UT Martin shot a 294 this morning before finishing strong with a 281 this afternoon for an aggregate total of 575 (-1). Host Arkansas State leads the team standings with a 549 (-27) while the Red Wolves’ “B” team ranks second in the standings with a 565 (-11).
“I was extremely proud of our team today,” Skyhawk head coach Jerry Carpenter said. “We didn’t play bad in the first round, we just started on the toughest part of the golf course so I was never concerned. The weather was cold to start the day but as the weather warmed up, so did our team. We made a lot of birdies in the afternoon round and that allowed us to move up the scoreboard.”
UT Martin senior Hunter Richardson led the tournament with 11 birdies on Day 1 and finds himself three strokes behind the individual leader. He shot a 69 in the first round before following with a 71 in Round 2 for a tally of 140 (-4), which ranks eighth in the field of 74 players. In addition to birdies, the Clarksville, Tenn. native led the Skyhawks in par-3 scoring (2.88, -1) and par-4 scoring (3.90, -2).
Not too far behind was Ross Redmont, who compiled totals of 73 and 68 today for a 141 (-3). He dialed up nine birdies – six of which came in the second round – while pacing UT Martin in par-5 scoring (4.50, -4) to rank 12th in the individual standings.
Nick Wolf played bogey-free golf for the first 17 holes of his afternoon round today, closing out his day with a 68 after a 75 this morning. He is tied with Richardson for the team lead in par-4 scoring (3.90, -2) while ranking 15th with a total of 143 (-1).
Jack Story and Cameron Smith followed with scores of 155 (+11) for the Skyhawks. Story carded seven birdies on the day – including four in a seven-hole stretch in Round 1 – to finish with a 77 this morning and a 78 in the afternoon. Smith (81-74) recorded a team-best 26 pars and a pair of birdies today, including 16 pars and a birdie in Round 2.
Competing as an individual, Mason Chandler notched seven combined birdies for back-to-back 79’s today as part of a 158 (+14) through 36 holes.
UT Martin is paired on Holes No. 1-5 with both Arkansas State teams for the third and final round, which begins at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, April 3. Chandler will tee off on Hole No. 17 alongside members from Samford and Eastern Illinois.
