MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin track and field squads saw success once again over the weekend, as portions of the teams competed at both the SEMO Joey Haines Invitational on Friday and the Ole Miss Classic on Saturday.
Starting off the weekend at the Joey Haines Invitational at Southeast Missouri on Friday night, sophomore Sydney Larkin stole the show with a new personal-record in the 10k with a time of 37:45.4 to eclipse her previous best mark by over a full minute.
The Skyhawks returned to the track on the following day at the Ole Miss Classic where newcomer Kewan Slaton left his mark. The sophomore would set two new school records in both the 100m and the 200m. In the 100m dash, Slaton posted a time of 10.9 while notching a time of 22.26 in the 200m for his second program record of the afternoon.
In the ladies 4x100m relay, the group of Maya Brown, Jasmyn Pilcher, Keilla Tud and Va’Shawnda Smith ran a season-best time of 48.55. Additionally, as an individual, Brown posted a new PR time of 12.74 seconds.
In the 1500m event, the ladies pair of Kara Martin and Kiana Hope posted big PRs in the event with times of 4:30.06 and 4:59.36, respectively. Meanwhile on the men’s side, the sophomore duo of Ryan Ford (3:55.29) and Austin Rogers (3:56.25) both tallied top-five finishes while notching strong PRs. Also Daniel Smith (4:05.69), Joey Palumbo (4:06.68) and Timothy Dye (4:07.34) would post new PRs for their young Skyhawk careers.
In the men’s 800m, Leonel Perez (1:54.8) and Jhon-Wes Walker (1:56.94) both tallied PRs and competed well to round out a day of strong mid-distance running.
“The sprints squad continues to progress and they are really starting to round into form at the right time,” UT Martin head coach Peter Dalton said. “Also, the 1500 squad ran so well on the big stage and there is much more to come from this talented group.”
UT Martin will return to action at the Austin Peay Invitational on Saturday, Apr. 14.
