MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin tennis team earned the doubles point today against Austin Peay but could not fend off the Governors in singles during a 5-2 loss at Skyhawk Varsity Courts.
UT Martin began its day with convincing 6-0 doubles victories, as Andrea Plantada/ Amelia Campbell (No. 3) and Asel Jumamukhambetova/Jemima Potter (No. 1) each glided to dominant wins to claim the doubles point.
The Skyhawk momentum elevated when Mizuki Sakurai opened singles action with a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 5.
UT Martin continued to battle throughout singles play but ultimately it was Austin Peay (8-6, 4-1 Ohio Valley Conference) who would gain the upper hand in the remaining five singles decisions.
Campbell took the first set at No. 6 but wound up with a 3-6, 6-3, 10-4 tiebreaker setback. At No. 1, Jumamukhambetova overcame a slow start to push OVC top player Lidia Yanes Garcia before falling 6-1, 7-5. Plantada competed at No. 3 and fell 6-3, 6-4 while Potter (6-1, 6-4) and Olha Burak (6-1, 6-2) fell at No. 2 and No. 4, respectively.
The Skyhawks close out the home portion of their schedule on Tuesday, April 3 when they play host to OVC foe Southeast Missouri at 2 p.m. The match will serve as Senior Day for UT Martin’s Elina Geut, a native of Orenburg, Russia who has spent all four years with the Skyhawk tennis program.
