UT MARTIN FOOTBALL HOLDS FIRST SCRIMMAGE OF SPRING
March 30, 2018
MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin football team hit the gridiron for the first of three scheduled scrimmages during the spring practice period on Friday morning.
Despite Mother Nature causing several alterations to the team’s spring practice schedule, the Skyhawks returned to Hardy M. Graham Stadium on Friday morning for a competitive intrasquad scrimmage. With about 95 scripted scenarios, the Skyhawks split into blue (defense) and white (offense) units in full tackle segments.
With several new faces at key positions, the bulk of the focus fell on continued install while getting numerous players game reps. Both teams would see success as the Skyhawk offense tallied 19 first downs on the afternoon while notching three touchdowns through the air. Defensively the team tallied nine defensive stops while forcing three turnovers – including a pair returned for touchdowns.
“It was good to get all of the quarterbacks some reps,” UT Martin head coach Jason Simpson said. “The main thing we are working on is having our offense develop more of an aggressive personality. We want them to have some swagger and energy on every play. The defense got some turnovers today but I like where we are right now.”
Dresser Winn paced the Skyhawk quarterback unit by completing 10-of-18 pass attempts for 116 yards. Meanwhile unit veteran Kyle Akin was perfect on the afternoon, completing 7-of-7 attempts for 77 yards and a touchdown. Fresh off a redshirt season, Joe Hudson completed 2-of-3 attempts for 43 yards and a touchdown while freshman early enrollee John Bachus III completed 2-of-5 passes for 17 yards and a touchdown.
Returning All-OVC performer LaDarius Galloway paced the running back core with 17 carries for 25 yards. Meanwhile Martin native Ty Brown tallied nine carries for 19 yards and All-OVC speedster Peyton Logan tallied eight carries for 11 yards.
Newcomer Terry Williams led the receiving unit with seven catches for 89 yards and a touchdown. Logan also participated in the passing game, notching three receptions for 26 yards to go along with his rushing performance. Receivers Victor McClinton and Donnell Williams also notched 15 yards and a touchdown each.
On the defensive side of the ball, the pass rushing duo of Mike Turner and Korbin Harmon recovered a fumble each which they returned to the endzone for a defensive touchdown. The team’s other forced turnover saw Anthony Brown recover a fumble forced by Austin Pickett.
Four different Skyhawks tallied sacks on the afternoon, highlighted by Harmon, Picket, Andrew Kerobo and Joseph Murry. Meanwhile Turner and Kevin Prather, Jr. flushed the pocket to tally quarterback hurries.
Julian Thompson-Clay paced the defense with six tackles on the day while Prather and Donald Cofield, Jr. notched five tackles each. Lamarcus Young also tallied a strong performance with four tackles. In the secondary, Evan Gowdy and Hamilton Hendricks both tallied a pair of pass breakups while Josh Dodd notched one of his own.
Kicking specialist Ryan Courtright was automatic on the day, making all three field goal attempts from 26, 23 and 28 yards respectively.
UT Martin will return to practice on Monday, April 2. The Skyhawks will then tentatively conducted their second of three scrimmages on Thursday, April 5 at 7 p.m.
