MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin softball struggled to find big hits on the afternoon, ultimately dropping a pair of Ohio Valley Conference matchups to league rival SIUE on Friday afternoon by scores of 4-1 and 2-1.
The Skyhawks (16-20, 2-4 OVC) were limited to just eight base hits on the day but held their own on the basepaths. Combined with the team’s five walks along with five players being hit by a pitch, UT Martin successfully stole 7-of-8 attempts on the bags to force the issue. Despite the team’s aggressiveness on the bag, the Skyhawks could not cash in the big hit, stranding 15 runners on base.
The team’s pitching staff was strong on the afternoon as three players saw action. Hannah Ridolfi (7-10, 2.45 ERA) and Caitlin Karo (9-7, 2.29 ERA) earned the tough decisions as starters. Meanwhile Seeley Layne allowed zero earned runs in 0.2 innings. Ridolfi would pitch 7.1 frames against SIUE in Game 1, allowing just one earned run to cross the plate while Karo notched a complete game, allowing two runs of her own.
Game 1: SIUE 4, UT Martin 1
Neither team found much in the form of offense in the game’s first three innings until SIUE got on the board first in the top of the fourth. A pair of batters would be hit by a pitch, setting up Alyssa Heren for a RBI single to centerfield to break the scoreless tie.
UT Martin would respond however in the bottom half of the inning. Alli Fulcher led off the inning with a walk before being pulled for pinch runner Alicia Hansen. With the speedster on the bags, she made quick work of the opportunity by swiping second base. With a runner in scoring position, Jodie Duncan would scorch a single through the legs of the opposing shortstop to knot the game a one run apiece.
The game remained tied heading into extra innings when the defense faltered. A leadoff single started the inning before the runner moved into scoring position on a throwing error. Another throwing error saw the leadoff run come home to score on the play from second base. With the ultimately go-ahead run home to score, the Cougars added another pair of runs to put the game away on RBIs by Tess Eby and Heren to make it a 4-1 contest.
Game 2: SIUE 2, UT Martin 1
Much like in the first game of the day, both team’s offense would be held in check through much of the game until SIUE scored in the top of the sixth inning. A single by Zoe Schafer started the attack before moving all the way to third on a stolen base and throwing error. With the go-ahead run just 60 feet from the plate, Eby stroked a double to right center to take a 1-0 advantage.
The Cougars chipped on another run in the top of the seventh inning as Conner Cutright opened the frame with a double to right field. Following a sacrifice bunt to move the runner over to third, Alana Cobb-Adams completed the rest of the damage with a single up the middle to take a two-score lead.
Needing a rally in the bottom of the seventh, the Skyhawks saw Hansen drill a leadoff double off the wall to start the frame. Lauren Myers then singled up the middle to put runners on the corners with two outs. With the potential tying run sitting at first, SIUE would throw a wild pitch off the backstop to score Hansen on the play and cut the margin to one. With Myers replacing Hansen at third base on the wild pitch, the Skyhawks needed one final hit but game would end on a groundout, dropping the series.
UT Martin will return to action on Wednesday, April 4 when traveling to Middle Tennessee. Action from Murfreesboro is scheduled to get underway at 4 p.m.
