CARBONDALE, Ill. – The University of Tennessee at Martin outdoor track and field squads faced a pair of tough challenges in the SIU Bill Cornell Spring Classic over the weekend. Not only did the Skyhawks matchup against some of the region’s best programs, Mother Nature proved to a formidable foe throughout the meet as cool temperatures, strong winds and wet conditions swept over the event.
Despite some of the natural roadblocks, the Skyhawks still showed their poise in the meet. One of the highlights of the meet was the performance of sophomore Austin Rogers who set a new personal-record with an event title in the men’s 5k, notching a time of 15:01.86. Not far behind the title performance was fellow sophomore Ryan Ford who finished as the runner-up with a time of 15:02.04.
In the women’s 4x100m relay, the Skyhawk grouping of Maya Brown, Jasmyn Pilcher, Keilla Tud and Va’shawnda Smith notched a strong finish with a time of 49.7 seconds.
Sophomore Kewan Slaton paced the squad in the men’s 400m event, posting a time of 51.97 for a new PR. Stepping down in distance, Tud was strong with a time of 27.51 in the women’s 200m dash.
In the longer distances, sophomore Natalie Motor posted a new PR in the women’s 1500m with a time of 5:12.39. Meanwhile in the 5k, sophomores Lydia Lee (18.06.24) and Nelly Kandie finished fourth and 11th, respectively despite difficult racing conditions.
This is outdoor track and the championship could have similiarly challenging weather,” UT Martin head coach Peter Dalton said. “It’s not real pleasant, but the athletes met the challenge of the competition and the weather today.”
UT Martin will return to action on Saturday, March 31 at the Ole Miss Classic.
