RALLY COMES UP JUST SHORT AS SKYHAWK BASEBALL FALLS 14-11 TO BELMONT

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball squad battled but fell by a 14-11 margin to Belmont this afternoon.
UT Martin (5-16, 2-6 OVC) was led by Carson Shrode (two hits, two home runs and four RBIs), Tyler Albright (two hits and two RBIs) and Ben Aslett (one hit and two RBIs). Jordan Stoner (two hits and one RBI) and Blake Davis (one hit, one home run and one RBI) also accounted for Skyhawk scoring. Casey Harford, Ethan Whitley and Anthony Adduci all tallied a base knock in the contest.
Winston Cannon got the starting nod in the matchup and tossed six innings while allowing six earned runs but managed to fan five Bruins along the way. Zack Denney logged an inning of work but gave up two earned runs in his time on the mound. Austin Buzick put made an appearance for 0.2 inning of baseball and rung up one in the process, allowing just one hit. David Hussey tossed 0.1 inning and needed just four pitches for that out. Konnor Aherin (2-2) was tagged with the loss as he came on in the ninth and allowed four earned runs as Belmont put together the come-from-behind victory.
Belmont struck first as it put a run on the board in the first inning to claim a quick 1-0 lead. Cannon would record a strikeout in the frame to end the inning.
Edwards would try to get things going for the Skyhawks as he tallied a single in the second and then swiped second base but could not find his way home.
Cannon made fairly quick work in the second frame when he rung up the first two Bruins he faced. He conceded a single but was able to pick off the runner, keeping Belmont off the board in the inning.
The Bruins tagged on five runs in the third to push their lead out to 6-0.
Cannon would work around a one-out single and need just nine pitches to get through the fourth inning.
UT Martin fired back in the fifth as Edwards led off the frame with a single to left field followed by a Whitley base hit to right field. A Belmont wild pitch would allow both runners to advance a base before Shrode uncorked a home run to narrow the score 6-3.
Another quick inning would be in store for Cannon in the fifth as he got through the frame on just eight pitches and recorded a strikeout in the process.
Belmont put up a run in the sixth to extend its lead 7-3 but Cannon would ring up a Bruin along the way.
The Skyhawks tallied a pair of runs in the seventh inning when Davis and Shrode connected for back-to-back home runs to close the gap to 7-5.
The Bruins answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the seventh to push the lead out to 9-5.
UT Martin rallied again in the eighth as Stoner led things off with a single to right followed by Harford reaching base on an error which allowed Stoner to get to third base. Albright then stepped to the plate to connect for a base knock to plate Stoner and move Harford to third. A wild pitch would then allow Harford to come home and once again narrow the Belmont lead 9-7.
The Skyhawks would work around a dangerous eighth inning as Buzick worked a strikeout and lineout and Hussey ended the frame on a friendly ground ball to keep the Bruins off the scoreboard.
With two outs in the top of the ninth, UT Martin circled the wagons as Adduci tallied a double to left center. Stoner then scorched a single to left to plate Adduci. Harford followed up with a single of his own to put men on first and second just in time for an Albright base knock to center to tie things up, scoring Stoner, and putting runners at the corners. A two-run double by Aslett would give the Skyhawks their first lead of the day, claiming an 11-9 advantage.
Belmont was able to put together a five-run rally in the ninth to take the ballgame by a score of 14-11.
UT Martin wraps up the series against the Bruins tomorrow with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
