UT MARTIN BASEBALL DROPS 6-3 DECISION AT BELMONT
March 23, 2018
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball suffered a 6-3 setback to Ohio Valley Conference opponent Belmont this evening.
UT Martin (5-15, 2-5 OVC) was led by Carson Shrode (three hits and three RBIs). Ethan Whitley (two hits and one run scored) was the only other Skyhawk to have multiple hits in the contest while Tyler Albright, Ben Aslett and Billy Edwards all connected for a base knock each.
Dom Bazzani (1-2) was tagged with the loss as he allowed six earned runs in his three-inning start but fanned three Bruins in that span. Peyton Cain showed great poise as he tossed the remaining five innings of two-hit baseball, ringing up a trio of Belmont batsmen along the way.
Belmont was able to strike first as it put a run on in the first inning to take an early 1-0 advantage.
Whitley would look to get things going as he reached on an error and then swiped second base but was unable to cross home plate.
Bazzani worked around a two-out walk in the second, only needing 16 pitches to get through the inning.
The Skyhawks showed some signs of life in the third as Shrode led off with a single to center followed by an Edwards single to right to put two on. Stoner then reached on a fielder’s choice to put runners at the corners. Alas, the succeeding UT Martin bats were unable to provide run support.
The Bruins connected for five runs in the third inning to push their lead out to 6-0.
UT Martin answered back with a three-run fourth when Aslett got things started with a single through the right side. Whitley then singled to left to put runners on first and second just before Davis reached on a hit by pitch to load things up. Shrode stepped to the plate and belted a three-run double to narrow the Bruin lead 6-3.
Cain came on in the fourth and retired the side in order on 11 pitches. He also got out of a pickle in the fifth by finding a friendly ground ball for a double play followed by another groudout to keep the Belmont bats quiet. Cain got found another double play in his favor in the sixth to end the frame and remain unscathed.
The UT Martin seventh got off on the right foot as Whitley scorched a double to left center before trying to tag up on a flyout later on. Shrode also tallied a single in the frame but the Skyhawks were unable to put runs on the board.
In the seventh, Cain sat down the side again in order just 10 pitches with a strikeout in the process. He made quick work of the eighth as well as he worked a groundout followed by a pair of punch outs.
The Skyhawks were unable to get the rally going in the ninth as Belmont claimed the 6-3 victory.
UT Martin continues the series against Belmont tomorrow with first pitch slated for 1 p.m.
