LOW ROUND BY RICHARDSON HELPS UTM PLACE FIFTH AT BOBBY NICHOLS INTERCOLLEGIATE
March 20, 2018
SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. – Senior Hunter Richardson tied for the best score in the 84-man field today to help the University of Tennessee at Martin golf team rise up to fifth place in the final standings of the 2018 Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate held at the Sevierville Golf Club’s River Course.
Lowering his score for the third consecutive day, Richardson tied individual medalist Tom Forster from Carson-Newman for the best third round tally with a 67 (-5). The Clarksville, Tenn. native finished fourth overall with a 209 (-7) for his 22nd top-five finish in the past three seasons.
As a team, the Skyhawks compiled a score of 289 (+1) during the third round – the third-best team score of the day behind only team champion Eastern Kentucky (286) and runner-up Carson-Newman (282). UT Martin placed fifth in the final standings with a total score of 871 (+7).
“There was a fog delay to start the day and it was muddy, wet and windy for most of the day,” Skyhawk head coach Jerry Carpenter. “A 289 is a very, very good score today considering the elements. We moved up a spot in the standings for a top-five finish – I’m proud of the guys for hanging in there and competing after we didn’t play our best in the first round. Today’s round was a good ending to the tournament for us.”
Ross Redmont carded an even-par 72 for the second straight round while Nick Wolf and Tate Chumley both tallied a 75 to complete the team scoring for UT Martin. Jack Story shot a 76 today as part of the Skyhawk lineup while Zach Haynes compiled his best score of the tournament with a 74 competing as an individual.
Redmont finished in 18th place in the tournament with a 218 (+2) while Wolf’s 219 (+3) placed him just outside the top-20 in the individual standings. Chumley and Haynes each finished with identical scores of 227 (+11) while Story completed his tournament with a 229 (+13).
The Skyhawks will take next week off from official competition before returning to the links on April 2-3 at the Red Wolves Classic, hosted by Arkansas State at Ridge Pointe Golf Course in Jonesboro, Ark.
