MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team wrapped up its appearance in the Skyhawk Hampton Inn Classic by splitting the day’s action at Bettye Giles Field, defeating Akron 10-2 in five innings before falling to Northern Kentucky 5-1 in the finale.
The Skyhawks (14-15) tallied 11 runs on the day – including a season-high tying 10 against Akron. Nine different players tallied base hits on the day while seven different Skyhawks tallied at least two. Senior Aeron Smith paced all players with three hits on the day while joining Paige Clark and Lauren Myers with two RBIs each.
In the pitching circle, four different players saw action. Freshman Caitlin Karo (8-4, 1.66 ERA) picked up the team’s victory against Akron, notching her eighth win of the season after allowing just one earned run in five innings of work. Hannah Ridolfi (6-8, 2.25 ERA) was hit with the loss against Northern Kentucky, allowing four earned runs in five innings while sophomore Seeley Layne and Samantha Scott also pitched one inning each.
“Even though I wish we could have found a way to win all four, I am proud of how this team came together over the weekend,” UT Martin head coach Donley Canary said. “We had some question marks coming into this tournament and still have some spots up for grabs. While all of those questions aren’t answered, I was pleased with how different players stepped up.”
Game 1: UT Martin 10, Akron 2 (Five Innings)
After being shutout in yesterday’s contest, Akron was the first team on the board on Sunday afternoon. Sydney Jascoe led off the inning with an infield single before a strange course of events brought two runs home to score. With two outs Kimberly Rodriguez would double to right center to score Jascoe but the botched cutoff attempt saw the ball return to the outfield on a fielding error allowing Rodriguez to come all the way around the bases to score on a little league home run, giving the Zips a 2-0 lead.
UT Martin charged back however in the bottom half of the innings to not only tie the game but take a lead it would not relinquish. Freshman Veronica Pezzoni would get the rally started with a single through the right side before swiping second base to get into scoring position. The speedster would later come home to cut the deficit in half on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Alli Fulcher. With two outs, Gracyn McBride would reach with a triple off the centerfield wall before Jodie Duncan put runners on the corners after being hit by a pitch. Pinch runner Halie Fain would take over for Duncan before moving herself into scoring position by stealing second. With runners on second and third, Clark singled up the middle to bring the pair home before later coming around to score herself on a RBI single by Smith.
With a two-run lead, the Skyhawks looked for more in the second inning. Senior Savannah Dodson would work a seven-pitch at bat into a double to right center before coming home on a single by Myers. Two more runs would come home to score in the inning as McBride tallied a RBI double while Duncan pulled a RBI single through the right side to take a 7-2 lead.
The Skyhawks would make it a six-run lead in the bottom of the third. With two outs, Dodson would tally her second base hit of the day before moving into scoring position by swiping second base. Dodson would later come around to score her second of three runs on the day on a RBI single by Myers later in the frame.
UT Martin would put the game away in the bottom of the fifth by enacting the mercy rule. Needing to runs to cross the plate in the inning, Pezzoni drove in the first with a RBI single up the middle before Dodson scampered home on a throwing error to seal the 10-2 victory.
Game 2: Northern Kentucky 5, UT Martin 1
UT Martin tallied its first and only run in the bottom of the second inning. Duncan would draw a walk before being relieved by the speedster Fain. Entering at first base, Fain would advance into scoring position on a groundout before scoring all the way from second on a bloop base hit by Smith right along the left field line to take an early advantage.
Northern Kentucky would break through onto the scoreboard in a big way in the top of the fifth inning. Three walks in the inning by Ridolfi plagued the starter, loading the bases with just one out. The Norse would take advantage of the opportunity as pinch hitter Morgan Glover singled through the left side to bring home a run while Sydney Ferrante scored another on a sacrifice fly. With the lead in hand, NKU split the game open with a two-run single by Madi Mulder to take a 4-1 advantage.
The Norse would add a final insurance run in the top of the seventh inning. A walk and a single put a runner in scoring position with one out. Looking for a big hit, Mulder would tally her third RBI of the contest by slicing a single down the right field line to make it a 5-1 score.
UT Martin will return to action on Wednesday, March 21 when traveling to in-state foe Memphis. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
