MURRAY, Ky. – The University of Tennessee at Martin track and field squads officially opened the outdoor portion of track schedule on Friday, boasting numerous podium finishes at the Margaret Simmons Invitational hosted by Murray State.
The Skyhawks continued making strides transitioning into the outdoor season after continued growth and development throughout the indoor slate. UT Martin would tally 13 event victories in the meet with success by both squads.
Transfer Va’shawnda Smith has been impressive in her debut season with the Skyhawks, picking up a pair of event victories in her outdoor debut. Smith won the 100m with a time of 12.27 while also picking up a victory in the 200m at 25.56 seconds.
In the men’s 4x100 relay, the grouping of Kewan Slaton, Jonathan Conley, Jarod Lawson and Josiah Smith narrowly missed out the program’s school mark with a time of 43.13. Despite not setting a new program record, the time was good for a first place finish. The women’s side, the results were similar as Maya Brown, Jessica Smith, Agok Ayuen and Smith posted a time of 49.73 to win the event.
Sophomore Kewan Slaton added to his team accomplishments with an individual title in the men’s 100m with a time of 11.18.
Conley continued his decorated career with another set of program records. The junior would post a new personal-record while setting a new school mark in the men’s 200m, notching a time of 22.41 to win the event. He continued to rewrite his own records in the 400m with a time of 49.67.
Sophomore Jasmyn Pilcher also notched a strong performance in the women’s 200m, posting a PR along with a third-place finish with a time of 25.93.
Returning to relays, the Skyhawk men posted a new school record in the 4x800. The grouping of Brian Kiprop, Daniel Smith, Leomar Perez and Conley would notch a time of 8:16.88 to set a new program benchmark by nearly four seconds under the previous mark.
In the women’s 1500m senior Amelia Martin and sophomore Nelly Kandie both notched PRs in the event. Martin would win the individual title with a time of 4:54.82 while Kandie wasn’t far behind at 4:55.91. On the men’s side, four Skyhawks earned the top-four spots while the sophomore pair of Ryan Ford (4:01.26) and Austin Rogers (4:03.15) finished first and second.
UT Martin will return to action when competing at the Bill Cornell Spring Classic on Saturday, March 24.
