COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team dropped a doubleheader at Tennessee Tech today, narrowly missing out 13-10 in the first game and falling 12-5 in the nightcap.
On the day, UT Martin (2-12, 0-2 OVC) was led by Jordan Stoner (five hits, one home run and one RBI), JoJo Allen (three hits, one home run and three RBIs). Ben Aslett (three hits, one home run and one RBI), Carson Shrode (two hits, one home run and two RBIs) and Ethan Whitley (one hit, one home run and four RBIs) also connected for power swings in the twin bill. Tyler Albright (two hits and one RBI), Blake Davis (two hits and one RBI), Collin Edwards (three hits and three RBIs) and Billy Edwards (one hit) all tallied hits on the day as well.
Austen Bullington and Winston Cannon started in Games 1 and 2, respectively. The Skyhawk pitching staff tallied a total of 12 strikeouts on the day. Relievers David Hussey and Jefferey O’Doherty put together a scoreless inning each in the first game of the day.
UT Martin returns to action tomorrow at 2 p.m. in the series finale against the Golden Eagles.
In the first game of the day, UT Martin was led by Edwards (three hits, three RBIs) as he finished just a home run shy of hitting for the cycle. Whitley (one hit, one home run and three RBIs), Stoner (four hits, one home run and one RBI) and Aslett (two hits and one RBI) also toted big bats in the matchup. Shrode (one hit, one home run and one RBI), Davis (one hit and one RBI) and Allen (one hit and one RBI) rounded out the scoring bats while Albright (one hit and one run scored) also tallied a hit.
Bullington (0-2) got the starting nod in the bout as he tossed 4.1 innings but was tabbed with eight earned runs in the start, fanning four Golden Eagles in the process. Peyton Cain finished out the fifth and recorded a strikeout in his 0.2 innings of work. The duo of Hussey and O’Doherty put together a scorelss inning each as Konnor Aherin finished the game but was tagged with two earned runs, ringing up a Tennessee Tech batter along the way.
The Golden Eagles would tally a run in both the first and second innings to give them a narrow 2-0 advantage through three innings. Bullington would fan three batters in that span, two in the first inning and one in the second.
UT Martin would go off in the fourth inning, which led off with Allen drawing a four-pitch walk before Edwards singled up the middle. Whitley then stepped up to the plate and belted a three-run homer down the right field line to give the Skyhawks a 3-2 lead.
Bulington pitched around a two-out double to retire the side on 12 pitches and fanned one in the process.
The Tennessee Tech offense would push six runs across the plate in the fifth frame to reclaim the lead, 8-3.
UT Martin found another run in the sixth as Edwards doubled down the third base line just before Davis drove him in on a single up the middle to narrow the Tech lead 8-4.
The Golden Eagles found another three runs in the home half of the sixth to push their lead out to 11-4.
The Skyhawks exploded in the seventh for four runs. Stoner would get the rally started as he singled to right field before Aslett tallied a base knock of his own. Both runners would move up a base on a wild pitch just before Albright drew a five-pitch walk to load the bases. Allen then worked the count for all its worth as he reached base via the walk on seven pitches to plate Stoner. An Edwards triple then drove in all three base runners ahead of him to cut the Tennessee Tech lead to 11-8.
UT Martin would get another two runs in the eighth as Stoner and Allen hit back-to-back home runs in the frame to edge closer to the Golden Eagles, 11-10.
Tennessee Tech found a pair of runs in the eighth to push the lead to 13-10.
The Skyhawk rally would come up just short but not before Shrode belted a homer to center field to narrow the final score 13-11.
In the second half of the twin bill, UT Martin was led by Allen (three hits, two doubles, one home run and two RBIs). Albright, Whitley and Shrode also recorded an RBI each in the matchup. Also tallying hits were Stoner, Aslett, Davis and Billy Edwards. Collin Edwards drew three walks in the game as Davis found a free pass as well.
Cannon (0-2) tossed four complete innings and allowed six earned runs in the start as he fanned three Golden Eagles in his time on the rubber. Austin Buzick threw two innings and tallied a strikeout in that span while Zack Denney also tossed a pair of frames and fanned two in the process.
Tennessee Tech would strike first as it tallied a run in the first inning to gain an early 1-0 advantage.
UT Martin answered back with a run in the top of the third as Billy Edwards got things started with a single back to the pitcher and then advanced a base on a wild pitch. Aslett found first via hit by pitch before Albright drove in Billy Edwards on a single to tie things up 1-1.
Tech tallied a run in both the third and fourth innings before unleashing a four-run fifth to take a 7-1 lead.
Cannon wrung up a pair of Golden Eagles in the fourth and was able to retire the side on 14 pitches.
With two outs, the Skyhawks were able to start a rally in the sixth. Allen was the first batter to tally a hit as he scorched a double down the left field line and found third base after a wild pitch. Collin Edwards and Davis would each draw a walk before Whitley would be hit to plate Allen. A Shrode single drove in Collin Edwards to narrow things 7-3.
Tennessee Tech put up two more runs on the board in the sixth inning to push its lead out to 10-3.
UT Martin scored a run in the seventh frame. Stoner led off with a single through the left side and would move to second on an Albright groundout. Allen then doubled down the left field line again to plate Stoner. Collin Edwards would draw a walk followed by Davis being hit by a pitch but the score would stay at 10-4.
The Golden Eagles scored a pair of runs in the eighth to take their lead to a 12-4 margin.
UT Martin made a push in the ninth as Allen homered to left field followed by a Collin Edwards walk. Davis then singled to left to plate Allen to give a final score of 12-5.
