SKYHAWKS FALL 5-2 AT JACKSONVILLE STATE IN OVC TENNIS OPENER

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – The University of Tennessee at Martin tennis team picked up a pair of singles victories today but it ultimately wasn’t enough as the Skyhawks fell 5-2 to Ohio Valley Conference rival Jacksonville State.
UT Martin’s wins came at No. 3 and No. 2, which were the first two singles matches to finish this afternoon. Andrea Plantada reeled off her second straight singles victory with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Malin Buechner at No. 3. Jemima Potter followed with a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 2 over Alessia Locati to nudge the Skyhawks ahead by a 2-1 margin in the match.
However, Jacksonville State (8-1, 1-0 OVC) accounted for each of the remaining five points. In doubles, the Gamecocks won 6-0 at No. 2 and 6-3 at No. 1 while the No. 3 matchup with UT Martin’s Olha Burak and Mizuki Sakurai against Marine Alberteau and Diana Monsalve was knotted at 3-all before it went unfinished.
The singles scores were tight throughout, as the Skyhawks fell by a 7-6 margin in three individual matchups. Amelia Campbell was defeated 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4 before Elina Geut suffered a tough 7-6, 6-3 setback at No. 6. Burak competed at No. 5 and was barely edged out by a 7-6, 6-3 margin while Asel Jumamukhambetova put up a fight before falling 7-6, 6-4 at No. 1.
UT Martin concludes its nine-match road swing to begin the spring on Saturday, March 10 when it visits No. 49 Alabama. First serve from the Alabama Tennis Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Ala. is set for 6 p.m.
