BIVENS HOME RUN LIFTS SKYHAWKS TO 2-1 VICTORY OVER SOUTHERN MISS
March 3, 2018
OXFORD, Miss. – A two-run home run by sophomore Aalia Bivens proved to be the difference for the University of Tennessee at Martin softball team on Saturday morning, picking up a 2-1 victory over Southern Miss on Day Two of the Ole Miss Classic.
The Skyhawks (7-10) got back to their winning ways with a key hit and strong pitching. While UT Martin saw five different player tally base hits on the day, it was a two-run blast by Bivens in the top of the first which put the game away.
On the pitching side, sophomore Hannah Ridolfi (4-4, 2.07 ERA) posted one of the better starts of her young Skyhawk career. Ridolfi struck out three while allowing zero earned runs in seven innings of work to notch her fourth victory of the season.
The Skyhawks found its firepower in the top of the first. After back-to-back outs to start the frame, Alli Fulcher drew a walk to continue the inning. While she remained 180 feet from home plate, she slowly turned her sprint into a trot as Bivens crushed a two-run home run to left center to take a 2-0 advantage.
Southern Miss scored its lone run in the bottom of the fifth inning as Destini Brown was hit by a pitch on the first pitch of the frame. Brown would then put her cleats to work, scoring all the way from first on the following play as a throwing error scored the runner and cut the margin in half.
Both teams would strand a single runner in each of the final two innings of the contest, but UT Martin would hang tough to secure a 2-1 victory.
UT Martin will close out its appearance in the Ole Miss Classic against Saint Louis on Sunday, March 4. First pitch is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
