MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men’s basketball squad will look to end its season on a high note when it travels to Southeast Missouri for an Ohio Valley Conference tilt on Saturday, Feb. 24. Tipoff time from the Show Me Center in Cape Girardeau, Mo. is set for 4:15 p.m.
The Skyhawks (9-21, 4-13 OVC) were officially eliminated from OVC Tournament contention with a 70-53 setback at Morehead State on Thursday. UT Martin held the Eagles to just 35.6 percent shooting but was hampered by a season-high 26 turnovers.
Terrence Parker pieced together one of the program’s best rebounding performances at Morehead State, pulling down 20 rebounds to go along with 12 points for his second double-double of the season. He became only the third Skyhawk to ever snare at least 20 rebounds in the program’s Division-I Era (since 1992) while he was the 17th different NCAA Division-I player to tally at least 20 boards in a single game this season.
The Skyhawks, who lead the OVC in defensive field goal percentage (.414) in league play, will seek a season split with the Redhawks. On Feb. 10 in the Elam Center, UT Martin led by 15 points with nine minutes remaining in the second half before Denzel Mahoney nailed a pull-up three-pointer just before the buzzer to send the game into overtime. Southeast Missouri then scored the final seven points of the contest in an 81-77 win.
The Redhawks (14-16, 8-9 OVC) saw their four-game winning streak snapped on Thursday, falling by a narrow 91-88 margin at Eastern Kentucky. Southeast Missouri hit 16 three-pointers and led by as many as 15 points in the first half but could not fend off a furious Colonel rally in the final 20 minutes.
Mahoney chalked up a game-high 26 points against Eastern Kentucky on Thursday. In three career outings against the Skyhawks, the sophomore is averaging 22.3 points per game.
