SKYHAWK RIFLE'S JOE MARTIN SET TO COMPETE AT NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
February 22, 2018
MARTIN, Tenn. – Joe Martin of the University of Tennessee at Martin rifle team has earned the opportunity to compete at the 2018 NCAA Rifle Championships as an individual in smallbore. Martin will travel to Charleston, SC as the championships are being hosted by The Citadel on March 9-10.
Martin becomes just the fifth Skyhawk to earn an at-large berth in the NCAA Championships in the last dozen years, joining Jessica Cobb (2014), Dacotah Faught (2014), Jaymi Collar (2006) and Heather Tillson (2006).
The Emerado, ND native is set to cap off a stellar senior season as well as Skyhawk career. This season, Martin has led the mixed team in 10 smallbore scores, five air rifle scores and seven total scores which thrust him to being chosen as a first team All-Ohio Valley Conference honoree for both disciplines. He also earned honorable mention All-American honors and was selected as one of just six OVC Scholar-Athletes in 2016-17.
Martin set career highs in both smallbore and air rifle this year. He fired his way to a smallbore score of 584 at the Withrow Open on Jan. 20 which ranks third all-time in program history while his impressive score of 590 in air rifle was set at the OVC Championships on Feb. 4.
An All-OVC performer in all four years, Martin led the Skyhawks to their program-tying aggregate high of 4626 at the NCAA Qualifier, which took place last week.
A total of 48 competitors will compete in the upcoming NCAA Championships, with 40 competitors coming from the top eight teams selected (Air Force, Alaska Fairbanks, Kentucky, Murray State, Nebraska, Ohio State, TCU and West Virginia). Martin was one of the remaining eight competitors who were selected based on the scores submitted from the designated qualifier.
Individual and team competitions in smallbore three-position (60 shots) will be held on Friday, March 9 at the McAlister Field House on The Citadel Campus.
