UTM Game Notes

The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball will start the final leg of its current four-game road swing with a matchup at Ohio Valley Conference foe Jacksonville State on Thursday, Jan. 25. Tipoff from Pete Mathews Coliseum is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

The Skyhawks (8-12, 4-4 OVC) enter the season in the middle of the pack of a loaded OVC race having played 50-50 ball through the league’s first eight games. UT Martin split its first two games of the four-game road trip, picking up a 72-44 victory at Eastern Illinois before falling victim to a three-pointer at the buzzer at OVC rival SIUE, 73-70, its last time out.

UT Martin boasts four players who are averaging in double figures in league play, highlighted by the OVC’s fourth highest scorer in sophomore Kendall Spray with 16.9 points per game. Spray leads all Skyhawks with 15.8 ppg in conference play while fellow Preseason All-OVC selection Ashton Feldhaus has rebounded nicely during the OVC slate to average 12.9 ppg – including a 50 percent clip from beyond the arc with 16 made three-pointers. The duo of Emanye Robertson (12.4 ppg) and Chelsey Perry (10.5 ppg) wraps up all four players in double figures.

Jacksonville State (12-7, 6-2 OVC) ranks amongst league leaders, entering the contest sitting third in the league standings. The Gamecocks also split both of their games last week, picking up a road victory at Morehead State (67-65) before falling in another nail-bitter at Eastern Kentucky (48-44) their last time out. The Gamecocks are led by the post duo of Rayven Pearson (9.2 ppg, 9.9 rpg) and Tyler Phelion (8.1 ppg, 5.5 rpg) who rank as the team’s top scoring threats while combining to tally 46 blocks.

Thursday’s matchup marks the 35th meeting between the two programs while the series is currently tied at 17 games apiece. While the series is tied, UT Martin has controlled the matchup as of late, winning nine consecutive games against Jacksonville State. The last time the Skyhawks lost in Pete Mathews Coliseum was on Feb. 11, 2010.
