WACO, Texas –
The National Collegiate Equestrian Association selection committee released its first NCEA event rankings for the 2018 national championships today and the University of Tennessee at Martin is ranked in the top-10 in each of the four events.

This past summer, the NCEA board of directors approved a change to the national championship format – which includes four event titles that will be included in the 2018 NCEA national championship, held on April 18-21 in Waco. The event titles will be determined through a head-to-head bracket format in each of the four events that comprise a head-to-head in-season meet.

National championship event titles will now be awarded in four separate events with four riders in each event conducted at the national championship: equitation over fences, equitation on the flat, horsemanship and reining. National championship discipline titles will also be awarded for Hunter Seat and Western, based on the points assigned to teams during the event competitions at the national championship. A national team championship will also be awarded based on combined discipline team head-to-head bracket competition at the national championship (four riders in each event).

Event rankings are determined at each head-to-head competition based on a variety of data points (win/loss, home/away, rank of opponent, etc.). The event rankings are based solely on the results from the single event in a head-to-head meet and may differ from the NCEA team rankings that are released every week throughout the season.

UT Martin appears eighth in today’s equitation on the flat rankings, carrying a 74.8 single-rider average with nine total team points on the season. The Skyhawks are ranked No. 7 in the equitation over fences ranking system, averaging a 76.7 score per rider with 11 team points this past fall.

In horsemanship, UT Martin can be found in the 10th slot – piling up a 70.5 per-rider average with nine team points. The Skyhawks come in at No. 4 on the national rankings in reining, averaging 65.4 points per scorer to go along with 12 team points on the season.

Today’s announcement is the first of four scheduled event rankings, as the selection committee will also release updated ranks on Feb. 15, March 15 and in April along with the final team rankings.
