MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men’s basketball team faces its second straight opponent from the Magnolia State when it begins a four-game homestand against Blue Mountain College on Wednesday, Dec. 20. Tipoff from the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center is set for 7 p.m.
After eight of their first 11 games took place on the road, the Skyhawks (3-8) begin a season-long two-week home stretch. This marks UT Martin’s first official matchup against Blue Mountain College on the hardwood although the Skyhawks have faced the Toppers twice in exhibition play (won 72-39 in 2015, won 72-48 in 2014).
UT Martin is coming off a 92-61 setback at Southeastern Conference opponent Mississippi State last Saturday. The Skyhawks trailed by just six points (39-33) at the halftime break before the host Bulldogs shot 67.7 percent (21-of-31) over the final 20 minutes. Matthew Butler pumped in a game-high 22 points while his starting backcourt mate Delfincko Bogan added 10 points for UT Martin.
Butler has led the Skyhawks in scoring in three out of the last five games, averaging 20.4 points per contest over that span. The Preseason All-Ohio Valley Conference honoree has scored at least 16 points in all but one game so far this season.
Blue Mountain College (4-6) competes in the Southern States Athletic Conference in the NAIA ranks. This is their fourth matchup this season against a Division-I institution, as the Toppers have taken on Southern Miss (lost 90-46 on Nov. 20), Nicholls State (lost 104-68 on Nov. 27) and Alcorn State (lost 83-56 on Dec. 18).
Viktor Lorenzen led the Toppers with 13 points off the bench in Monday’s setback at Alcorn State. Quan Cothron (12 points) and Jaylon Bardley (11 points) also reached double-figures in the scoring column for Blue Mountain College, which is located in Blue Mountain, Miss.
