SKYHAWK MEN'S HOOPS VISITS FAMILIAR NONCONFERENCE FOE ARKANSAS STATE ON TUESDAY
December 4, 2017
MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men’s basketball squad makes the 140-mile trek to the Natural State for a midweek showdown against Arkansas State out of the Sun Belt Conference. Tipoff from the Convocation Center in Jonesboro is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 5.
These two programs are very well-acquainted with each other, as this marks the 13th meeting in the last 14 years between the Skyhawks and the Red Wolves. UT Martin has won two of the last three matchups in the series, including the last meeting in Jonesboro (a 75-73 victory on Nov. 17, 2014).
Arkansas State is the fifth 20-win team from last season to appear on the Skyhawks’ schedule so far in 2017-18. UT Martin will look to wrap up its three-game road trip on a high note as it is in search of its first road victory of the season.
The Skyhawks (1-7) are coming off a setback at Chattanooga on Saturday, jumping out to a 28-25 halftime lead before finding themselves tied with two minutes to go. However, the host Mocs overcame a 36.5 percent shooting performance to win by a 66-63 margin. Matthew Butler was responsible for a season-best 27 points (including UT Martin’s final 15 points of the game) while Fatodd Lewis chipped in 11 points and a team-best seven rebounds for the Skyhawks.
Butler has scored at least 16 points in seven of UT Martin’s eight games this season while Lewis has paced the Skyhawks in rebounding in seven consecutive contests - averaging 13.0 points and 8.7 rebounds per game over that stretch.
Arkansas State (2-5) enters the contest on a three-game skid, including a 75-72 loss at Cleveland State last Wednesday. In that game, the Red Wolves connected on 50 percent (10-for-20) of their three-point field goal attempts but were hampered by 18 turnovers. Deven Simms posted team-highs in points (14), rebounds (seven) and assists (four) for Arkansas State, who also saw Tristin Walley (13), Ty Cockfield (12) and Rashad Lindsey (11) score in double-figures.
