MARTIN, Tenn. – For the first time in nearly 35 years, the University of Tennessee at Martin men’s basketball team will square off against the Chattanooga Mocs when the cross-state rivals clash at McKenzie Arena on Saturday, Dec. 2. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. CST.
It’s been 12,752 days since these two sister schools played each other. The programs met on the hardwood a total of nine times from 1974-1983 but the rivalry has been dormant since Chattanooga claimed an 81-68 home win on Jan. 3, 1983.
The Skyhawks (1-6) are in the midst of a three-game road swing as part of a grueling early season schedule that pits UT Martin on the road for seven of its first nine contests.
The Skyhawks closed out the month of November with an 84-60 setback at LSU on Wednesday. The starting backcourt duo of Matthew Butler (17 points) and Darius Thompson (career-high 16 points) combined to score nearly half of UT Martin’s points while Jailen Gill (eight points, eight rebounds) narrowly missed out on his first career double-double. Fatodd Lewis also snared a game-high nine rebounds for the Skyhawks, who were stymied by 18 turnovers that led to 29 Tiger points.
Chattanooga (3-4) is coming off a slim 75-70 setback at Akron on Tuesday evening. In that game, Rodney Chatman’s 19 points led the Mocs, who shot a blistering 60 percent (15-of-25) in the second half to help create a dramatic finish. Nat Dixon (16 points, team-highs of six rebounds and six assists) and Joshua Phillips (13 points) also scored in double-figures for Chattanooga.
The Mocs boast a balanced scoring attack that includes five players who average double-digits in the scoring column. Leading scorer Phillips is a Middle Tennessee transfer who has shot 81.3 percent (13-of-16) in his two games since joining the team after two seasons on the Chattanooga football squad.
The game will be streamed live on ESPN3. Links for the video stream, radio call on Star 95.1 FM and live stats can all be found at the top of the webpage.
