MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men’s basketball squad closes out the month of November with its second trip to Baton Rouge, La. in a week as the Skyhawks take on the LSU Tigers out of the Southeastern Conference. Tipoff from the Pete Maravich Assembly Center is set for 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 29.
This is the fifth all-time meeting between UT Martin and LSU and first since 2010. The Tigers are the first of two SEC teams on the Skyhawks’ 2017-18 docket, as UT Martin will also travel to Mississippi State on Dec. 16.
The Skyhawks (1-5) are looking to snap a three-game losing skid, as UT Martin is coming off a 69-66 road loss at Southern and a 65-55 home setback against UMKC last week. Redshirt junior forward Fatodd Lewis averaged a double-double in those two contests, notching 16.5 points and 10.0 rebounds per outing. He dropped a career-best 25 points at Southern last Wednesday before hauling in a career-high 13 rebounds in Sunday’s game against UMKC - the fifth consecutive game that he has led the Skyhawks in rebounding.
The senior backcourt duo of Matthew Butler (11.5 points per game) and Kahari Beaufort (11.0 points per game) also averaged double-figures in the scoring column last week for UT Martin, who has had five leading scorers in its six games so far this season.
LSU (3-2) is coming off three games against stout competition in the Maui Invitational last week, defeating Michigan (77-75) before falling to No. 12 Notre Dame (92-53) and Marquette (94-84). The Tigers currently rank eighth in Division-I basketball in field goal percentage (.532).
Freshman guard Tremont Waters averaged 22.7 points per game on 52.4 percent shooting (22-of-42) in the tournament. That includes a 39-point outburst against Marquette last Wednesday, which is the fourth-best single-game scoring performance in the nation in 2017-18.
