The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team will play host to Southern Conference foe Western Carolina on Sunday, Nov. 26. Tipoff for the matinee contest is scheduled for 2 p.m. and serves as the front end of a doubleheader with the Skyhawk men’s basketball team.
The Skyhawks (1-3) are looking to snap a losing skid after dropping back-to-back contests for the first time this season. In the team’s most recent outing, the Skyhawks fell on the road at regional rival Arkansas State 84-73. UT Martin suffered a tough third quarter which would put the team in a hole that would be too deep to climb out of while struggling from beyond the arc at just 27.8 percent.
Freshman Chelsey Perry continued to excel in the contest, notching a new career-high with 18 points while tying her previous career mark with seven rebounds to pace the Skyhawks. Junior Myah Taylor (13 points) and senior Janekia Mason (12 points) also scored in double figures. So far on the season, the Skyhawks boast four players in double figures led by sophomore Kendall Spray at 14.5 points per game while Perry (14.0 ppg), Taylor (12.8 ppg) and Mason (10.3 ppg) round out the quartet.
Western Carolina (1-3) enters Sunday’s contest also looking to snap a string of back-to-back losses to Eastern Kentucky (62-59) and Georgia (76-50). The Catamounts have a balanced scoring starting lineup with all five players averaging over 7.5 points per game. Kyia Hough paces the squad with 9.3 points per game while Sherae Bonner is not far behind with 8.8 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game.
This marks just the second matchup all-time between UT Martin and Western Carolina. The Skyhawks won last year’s meeting at Cullowhee, N.C. 84-72.
