MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men’s basketball team completes its participation in the Global Sports Invitational when it heads to Baton Rouge, La. for a pre-Thanksgiving tilt against the Southern Jaguars out of the Southwestern Athletic Conference. Tipoff from the F.G. Clark Center is set for 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 22.
The Skyhawks (1-3) will look to even their record in the Global Sports Invitational, a multi-team event that is played at campus sites. UT Martin sports a 1-2 record against the field of Marshall (lost 102-91 in overtime), Illinois (lost 77-74) and North Carolina Central (won 74-57) in the 2017 edition of the event.
The Skyhawks are coming off a tough 76-59 road loss at defending Mid-American Conference champion Akron last Saturday. In that game, UT Martin trailed by just a single possession with 14:32 left to play before the Zips would later unreel an 11-0 run to put the game away. Matthew Butler and Fatodd Lewis each tossed in 18 points to pace the Skyhawks, who claimed a 30-14 advantage in points in the paint.
The new-look UT Martin squad boasts four players who average double-figures in the scoring column, led by Butler’s 17.5 points per contest. Dominique Williams (12.5), Delfincko Bogan (11.8) and Lewis (10.3) have also excelled for the Skyhawks, who have had a different leading scorer in each of their first four games.
Southern (0-5) is coming off a five-game road swing in the span of 10 days, including a 78-61 setback at No. 1 Duke last Friday. Preseason All-SWAC member Jared Sam dialed up 21-point performances against both Illinois and Marshall earlier this season while Jamar Sandifer has led the Jaguars in scoring in each of the last two outings.
Southern fell by an 80-67 margin at North Carolina Central on Sunday. Sandifer registered team-highs of 16 points and seven rebounds while Eddie Reese (13 points, team-high five assists) and Sam (12 points) also guided the Jaguars.
