MARTIN, Tenn. – After two close calls on the road to start the season, the University of Tennessee at Martin men’s basketball team will go for its ninth straight home victory when it hosts North Carolina Central on Wednesday, Nov. 15. Tipoff time from the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center is scheduled for 7 p.m.
The Skyhawks (0-2) have created quite a home court advantage, having not lost in the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center since Dec. 29, 2016. Since the start of the 2014-15 campaign, UT Martin has gone 34-7 in home contests. That includes 14 wins last season alone, which ranked as the most for the program since the 1987-88 season.
The Skyhawks are in search of their first win in 2017-18 after a pair of sound performances on the road last week. On Friday at Marshall, UT Martin led by 15 points at the halftime break before falling victim to a hot-shooting Thundering Herd squad by a 102-91 margin in overtime. Two days later at Illinois, the Skyhawks had two potential game-tying shots in the waning moments of the game before falling 77-74.
Dominique Williams was crowned as Ohio Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week on Monday after averaging 20.0 points during the early stages of the season. UT Martin has also received consistent performances from Preseason All-OVC guard Matthew Butler (18.0 points per game) and reserve guard Delfincko Bogan (16.5 points, 4.5 assists, 4.5 steals and 3.0 rebounds per contest).
North Carolina Central (0-2) won 25 games on its way to a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference title and an NCAA Tournament berth in 2016-17. The Eagles lost all five starters from that squad and entered the season with a roster that had combined for only 11 career starts (trailing only Pittsburgh for the fewest in the nation).
Raasean Davis has led North Carolina Central in both scoring (14.0 points) and rebounding (9.0) in each game so far this season as the Eagles have opened with road losses at Illinois-Chicago (65-55 last Friday) and at Evansville (68-55 on Monday).
