MARTIN, Tenn. – The No. 10 Skyhawk equestrian team’s bid for a third consecutive victory over a nationally ranked opponent came up just short today as No. 4 SMU escaped with a slim 8-7 win on the final day of the Masterson Farms Invitational Hosted by the University of Tennessee at Martin.

The Skyhawks accounted for three of the four MOP’s during this morning’s championship competition, as the final outcome came down to the wire. One head-to-head matchup in equitation on the flat resulted in a tie score while two more points for SMU were decided by 0.5 points apiece.

Monika Zoromski (88, equitation over fences), Abbie Hopkins (93, equitation on the flat) and Madeline Williams (68.5, reining) each earned top honors from the judges in their respective events with MOP performances.

UT Martin tied SMU in the Western discipline, thanks in large part to a 3-1 edge in reining. The Skyhawks were narrowly edged out by a 4-3 margin in Hunt Seat action.

Zoromski’s 88 was by far the best score of any 16 competitors in equitation over fences, topping the next-highest total by five points. Hopkins also managed a team point for UT Martin with an 82-point performance.

In horsemanship, Bobbie Piddock racked up a team point for the Skyhawks after a 73-point effort. Tess Baumann almost came away with a point for UT Martin but was defeated by 0.5 points on her head-to-head draw.

Hopkins’ career-high 93 points in equitation on the flat resulted in her first career MOP in that event. Quinn Reed also performed well with an 87-point ride that tied SMU’s Mary Elizabeth Cordia.

For the second straight day, the Skyhawks held a commanding advantage in reining. Williams dialed up her first MOP of the season while Noel Meadows (69.5) and Hannah McDonald (67.5) also secured team points. Liana Nowak nearly gave UT Martin a sweep in the event but her 68.5-point performance was just 0.5 points shy of a draw.

The Masterson Farms Invitational Hosted by UT Martin wrapped up a highly successful fall season for the Skyhawks as the squad went 2-3 against nationally ranked opponents (two setbacks coming by just one point apiece). UT Martin begins the spring portion of its schedule on Feb. 16 when it hosts current No. 8 TCU.
