TUSCALOOSA, Ala. –The University of Tennessee at Martin cross country team put a positive stamp on the 2017 season with both team’s competing at the NCAA Division I South Regional Championship held at the Harry Pritchett Running Park in Tuscaloosa, Ala. on Friday morning. Included in the morning was the men’s squad posting a history 13th place finish – the highest in program history. 

UT Martin went into the NCAA South Regional Championship with the men’s squad ranked No. 14 while the women’s squad was unranked. With 47 Division I programs in the South Region, the championship boasted the top teams in the region going head-to-head with the opportunity to advance to the national finals.  

The Skyhawk men outmatched their No. 14 ranking in the region to finish 13th overall. In the victory, UT Martin bested regionally ranked programs East Tennessee State (No. 13) and Florida (No. 15) along with Miami, Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, Chattanooga and Austin Peay to name a few.

Sophomore standout Edwin Kurgat led the way for the Skyhawks once again with a 10k personal-record time of 30:28.0 to finish eighth overall out of 164 competitors. His time and overall finished garnered him All-Region honors.

Sophomore Ryan Ford also posted a huge PR in the regional, notching a time of 31:57.1 to finish 31st overall. Running strong up the middle was sophomore Austin Rogers with a time of 32:36.8 to finish 60th. The freshman duo of Daniel Smith (33:53.3) and Andrew Dodson (34:12.7) rounded out the scoring efforts in their first championship appearance.

The Skyhawk women posted a strong morning as well, finishing 17th in a loaded field of 31 of the region’s best teams. Sophomore Kara Martin led the Skyhawks with a 56th place finish with a PR time of 21:35.4. Senior Amelia Martin wasn’t far behind in her final cross country meet of her Skyhawk career, posting a PR of her own with a time of 21:35.4.  

Also notching new PRs were Nelly Kandie (21:50.5), Lydia Lee (22:14.5), Agok Ayuen (22:32.6) and Sydney Larkin (22:44.5). 

“With both teams competing at the NCAA South Regional was a great way to finish season,” said UT Martin head coach Peter Dalton. “The program just continued to build from strength to strength with young group. Look for much more to come in track season and beyond.”
