MJ Vowell takes over as head coach of the University of Tennessee at Martin rifle team for the 2017-18 season.
Vowell spent over 20 years in the United States Army and achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. During that time, she gained extensive knowledge of logistics management as she served in the ordnance corps.
Since 2014, Vowell has served as a firearms instructor for the Freedom Training Group (FTG), LLC, in Louisville, Ky. FTG is the premier firearms trainer associated with Cabela’s of Louisville. While working with FTG, she has served as a KY CCDW instructor with a concentration in sporting rifle and basic pistol instruction as well as Range Safety Officer.
She is a charter member of Freedoms’ Fierce Femmes (F3), a non-profit organization that supports women of Kentuckiana by providing a safe, respectable way for women to learn about the shooting sports. As a member of F3, Vowell provides instruction on range safety of basic pistol, rifle and shotgun as well as archery for all F3 members.
While serving as Senior Logistics Supervisor in the US Army from 2010-14, Vowell led over 100 personnel through a progressive training strategy that resulted in significant efficiencies in multi-million dollar contract management and resource forecasting. She also guided the organization through multiple logistics initiatives and group projects and capitalized on cross-leveling of individual skills. She established liaison with strategic partners for collaboration, synchronization and future planning of over 500 base closures, the reduction of thousands of combat vehicles and the redistribution of supplies and services that resulted in the organization’s ability to remain on its guided path.
From 1990-93, Vowell served as an instructor/shooter with the International Rifle Selection, U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU) and annually competed in matches from Camp Perry, Ohio to the U.S. International Shooting Championships in Chino, Calif. She was also a member of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit Conseil International du Sport Militaire (CISM) team for three consecutive years (1991-93) and competed in the host countries of Nigeria, Norway and the United States.
While at Camp Perry, Vowell assisted in coaching a local junior shooting team and served as the chaperone for their attendance at the National Matches, also located at Camp Perry. She also supported NRA civilian marksmanship programs by providing official scoring on a significant amount of NRA postal match target submissions annually.
A native of Bumpus Mills, Tenn., Vowell competed for Bob Beard while a student at UT Martin from 1985-1988 and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in natural resource management. She was a member of the 1986 Gulf South Conference championship squad and also earned a berth on the 1988 USAMU CISM team with competitions held in Lahti, Finland. A certified NRA Range Safety Officer and NRA Level 1 Coach in smallbore and air rifle, she was also named the Kentucky Bluegrass State Games Air Rifle Champion in 1988.
