Skyhawk Volleyball | Michelle McLaughlin - Student Assistant
Although it is her first year as a student assistant, Michelle McLaughlin is no stranger to the Skyhawk volleyball program.
The Bartlett, Ill. native was a volleyball student-athlete at UT Martin from 2013-14, appearing in 53 matches (153 sets) in that span. She battled through injuries to rack up 27 kills, 16 assists, 176 digs, 22 service aces and four blocks during her Skyhawk playing career.
McLaughlin earned a pair of starts in back-to-back Ohio Valley Conference matches in 2014. She eclipsed double-figures in the dig column in three different matches, compiling a season-best 14 digs in five sets at Austin Peay on Sept. 26. She also earned a spot on the OVC Commissioner’s Honor Roll that year.
As a freshman in 2013, McLaughlin compiled multi-ace performances in four different matches - all against OVC competition. Her best match came on Nov. 9 when she scooped up a career-high 19 digs over five sets against Murray State.
McLaughlin then transferred to the University of Central Florida in 2015, playing one season under head coach Todd Dagenais. She appeared in five matches (six sets) as a junior before coming back to UT Martin to complete her academic studies.
McLaughlin prepped at St. Francis High School in Wheaton, Ill., which is one of the all-time winningest programs in the state of Illinois. She played for legendary head coach Peg Kopec, accumulating 362 kills and 143 service points in her storied career. McLaughlin helped guide the Spartans to a 37-5 record and a Class 3A state championship during her senior campaign, capturing the school’s first state title since 2006. Overall, she was part of four conference championship squads during her tenure at SFHS.
McLaughlin is majoring in marketing at UT Martin. She is the daughter of Tom and Carolyn McLaughlin.
