Skyhawk Athletic Training | Nelson Davis - Assistant Athletic Trainer
Nelson R. Davis has served as an assistant athletic trainer for the University of Tennessee at Martin since the 2007-2008 season.
Prior to coming on staff with UT Martin, Davis worked for the Vanderbilt Sports Medicine Center in Martin. He has held a variety of positions within the center since he first began working there in 1996 as a volunteer/student athletic trainer. For the last several years Davis worked as the center's assistant manager.
In 1998, Davis earned his athletic trainer license from the state of Tennessee. That same year he also became a certified athletic trainer through the National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification.
Davis was named the Tennessee Athletic Trainers' Sociery College Trainer of the Year in January of 2015. Selected after nominations from his colleagues and peers in the sports medicine and athletic training profession, Davis is only the second UT Martin athletic trainer to earn the prestigious award, following Linda Barker in 2000.
Davis was recognized with a service award by the Ozark Region of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association and also earned sports medicine service awards from the Tennessee High School Rodeo Association in 1998 and from the National High School Rodeo Association in 2013.
Davis was inducted into the UT Martin Rodeo Hall of Fame in 2007 for his many years of commitment and service to the UT Martin Rodeo Booster Club. He was also named an honorary rodeo team member in 1997, and presented with an honorary team captain buckle award in 1998. A member of the Rodeo Booster Club since 1994, he has also served as the organization's president from 1998-2003 and its vice president from 2004-2007. He served as an assistant coach and an athletic trainer for the UT Martin rodeo team during their 2014 national championship season.
Davis has also been honored with a service award from the Ozark Region of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association and has worked as the region's medical director since 2002.
An Illinois native, Davis graduated cum laude from UT Martin in 1997 with a bachelor's degree in physical education and health, and a minor in sports medicine. He is married to the former Lynn Houston of Martin. Davis has three children from a previous marriage: Taiga, Jordan and Dusty. Taiga, a UT Martin alum, works as a pharmacist while Jordan is a U.S. Marine and Dusty is a carpenter.
